Diagnosis to Surgery to Chemo in 1.5 months !!Views: 445

Hi, my name is Alex Javaras I will be writing in this Blog for my Father George Javaras who was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer on 4-7-07. I will begin with the story and a little background on my Dad. He is 62 years young and pretty much a picture of health. He always goes to the doctor for his normal checkups. Everything would always come back fine. Went for a colonoscopy when he was 51 and they found him to be clean. He went back to the doctor’s on April 5th with slight pain in his upper abdomen. The doctor told him he had gas and told him to go home and take GAS-X!
The next day he had more pain so my mom took him to the emergency room were my cousin is an ER doctor. Again, they took blood and found everything to be normal, only very slightly anemic (11.9). They also did a fecal blood test and found nothing. My cousin suggested just to be safe, do a CT scan. That is when we found out what was wrong! To this day that was the most difficult time in my life and the whole family for that matter. They saw the tumor by the appendix 5.0cm and 3 nodules in the Liver 1cm being the biggest and multiple small nodules less than 1 cm in lungs.
he had surgery for a colon resection on April 12th. They removed 1.5ft of his colon from his apendix up and was reconnected. He got his first round of folfox on May 21st and has 11 more treatments for 6 months. They will add Avastin on his third treatment. His CEA level was 38 before surgery and dropped to 15 after he had surgery. The nodules that were seen on the CT in the liver were not visible to the surgeon, he said he only felt them. The lungs have not been touched. His first treatment went well, Mon. Oxalipaltin, and then they hook him up to a pump for FU5 until Wed. morning. The only reaction he had was a little nausea on Thurs. and a little weak. But other than that he was Golfing with us on Sat. and Sun. Looks good and feels good. He has gained all his weight back after surgery.(He lost 15 Pounds) Back to 185.

Hi to George and his buddy doing the posting,
Welcome to the family. We are here to give love and support.

I too have a brother-in-law that is going through some of the same things. So I understand some of what is going on.

Come on in any time.

Hi Alex, Tell your Dad I’ll pray for a full recovery. Sounds like he’s got a wonderful attitude – really important. And a truly great son – a true blessing!
Hugs!
